I wrote this today and wanted to leave it somewhere.
``` Punk is quite literally what you make of it, It's essence is to defy standards in any matter you think are bullshit.
Speedrunners are punks rebelling against game mechanics.
Outsider artists are punk as fuck because they defy the rules set by the art/music community.
hackers are punks looking at the rules of compute and just saying now fuck that noise we can do this with half the compute and twice the efficiency. ```
I think this is the clearest I can put the idea of punk into terms that are reasoably universal. Its a concept I actually do hold near and dear to myself. I listend to a lot of the classics growing up and the ska and dub bands they were influenced by. From Talking Heads to Bad Religon; I looked for obscure acts and subgenres. I fell in love with the folksy works of AJJ (Andrew Jackson Jihad) to the technologically influnced crust made by The Protomen on their first album.
But that's punk as music, what about punk as a set of ideas? I think the cypherpunks embody the ideas pretty good, the idea we can use our wits as weapons. Math as a way to defy the man! A bastille of physics and logic for all our secrets! You think im bluffing? PGP was ITAR restricted at one point; WE COULDNT SHARE ALGORITHMS WITH PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE US! The feds were SCARED of the MATH. How punk is that? an idea that is so powerful they try to hide it. so unconventional and against the grain that it gets censored. This is what "against me" WISHES they could achieve.
